How Cheesy Love Letters Rekindled Our Romance

How Cheesy Love Letters Rekindled Our Romance

via

Have you ever heard of The Five Love Languages? We should probably write up a book review on it (it's such a good read), but for now, I'm going to skip ahead to my point, which is that I'm pretty sure I know my love language is 'acts of service.' I'm all about thoughtfulness-big or small, I just care about the thought behind actions. At the same time, I'm also the most unromantic person I know. When I was 16 years old, I had a "boyfriend" give me a dozen red roses for our date. Not only was I embarrassed by it, but I just felt like a dozen red roses was the most stereotypical, unoriginal, gag me with a spoon, kind of 'act of service' and I wanted nothing to do with it. Even worse, my sweet step-mom decided to dry the rose petals as a keepsake...a month later she gave me a little bag of the dried rose petals, with his note attached. I was mortified! Needless to say, I avoid the 'romance' department like the plague! But maybe the romance I need isn't your typical "Cinderella" story, just real and thoughtful acts of kindness to melt my non-romantic heart.

Before I got married, I lived in a fairy-dream land with the idea that once you're married, your life is set and you live "happily ever-after". The reality is that you have to work hard to make a marriage work. It takes patience, love, empathy, respect... along with a whole lot of other things. So one day, after a therapy session (no shame here-it's been the best thing for our marriage!) and after needing a little more 'thoughtfulness" from my hubby, he jokingly started to write me love notes-poems if you will-daily. At first, it started as a joke-he knew how unromantic I was, so in his own way, he made them silly and funny-probably to make me laugh and take that gushy romantic vibe off. Bless his little heart because It worked! He would text me, leave notes at my desk, or leave notes on the fridge, or on our chalkboard in our kitchen. They were thoughtfully silly, and completely us, and this lasted months. Below are some of the many silly loves notes he sent me! And PS. The ones that might make you want to vomit (like oozing of cheeseball romance) are just that!

You didn't have your keys for the house, but you'll always have the key to my heart.
Love you.

I wish we were off the clock.
We could be at the boardwalk.
I wish we could get roller coasted.
We would use sunscreen so you don't get toasted.
Love you.

I had a hard time trying to find the words that rhyme
So I'll just come out of the blue and say I Love You.

August 9, 2015
I come home, the dogs start barking
I get off my bike
My heart starts sparking
I go to sleep tonight, I hope I don't get up early
to find parking.

August 13, 2015
I hope dinner is fun
I wish we could've played in the sun.
The time here seems to lag
I could be worse, I could've been forced to bag.
I can't wait to see you and the dogs
Even though you're all bed hogs.
Love you

Love you

Life, of course, has gotten in the way and I haven't seen as many 'love notes' as I had in the past, but going through these notes to share them with you today gives me all the giddy feelings all over again. Some of these notes are really silly, but they became something I looked forward to everyday, and helped keep our spark alive and well. Are there special things you and your beau do for romance?
