For some brides it's a no brainer, they instantly know they want a dramatic cathedral veil, a classic elbow-length or a retro blusher. For many of us though, the jury's still out on whether veils are simply just too expected, traditional, or fussy.

Over the last few years, the bridal staple was replaced with flowers, vintage style accessories, hair bands, and even regal crowns.

But as modern brides look to inject a little timeless style and romance into their wedding day look, veils of all manner are making a comeback.

And one group of wedding industry pros who couldn't be happier about it? Photographers.

For any wedding photographer worth their salt, a veil gives them a unique opportunity to capture movement and texture.

Like your bouquet or your dress, it's a prop of sorts, that adds a little interest to your pictures and helps you pose when you're feeling a little silly (which you do when you're standing for photos for 40 minutes straight!)

From Samm Blake of The Wedding Artists Collective: I always love walking shots if a bride is wearing a veil, I love when the wind catches it as it creates a lot of movement and love the unexpected shots it creates. I always love photographs taken in the moment rather than staged and a veil can really help more natural moments happen. A veil can definitely adds a lot more variety to your photographs as it can be used to add movement and depth to photographs. I love when a bride is simply adjusting her veil and letting it wrap around her, it really helps posed photographs feel less staged / camera aware.

From a photography perspective, I love the gauzy way in which a veil translates light. This texture and flexibility of shape allows for a lot of play within a portrait session and the wedding itself; you never quite know how a veil will behave, which creates surprising and beautiful photographic moments.

Veils can make for such interesting composition and moments with it trailing behind the bride and catching in the wind, sunlight filtering through it, or as a wrap around bare shoulders. I like to recommend some time shooting with the veil and shooting without it to give variety to a bride's look. There's a greater ease to moving without a veil, especially when it's floor length, but there's a compositional element that a veil gives a brides look that is nice to have for a portion of the day as well.
