Creative Family Farm Outdoor Woodland Humanist Wedding - Whimsical...

via

Gaël and Peter tied the knot back in August 2014 at Gaël's family's farm in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. They had a humanist woodland ceremony followed by a rustic barn reception. Their whole day was a real culmination of love, with family and friends all helping them to create a really special day.

Gaël looked super beautiful in Omari by Catherine Deane with a pretty Gypsophila flower crown, which looked perfect. I adore the vibrant blue Hydrangea bouquets, the array of music choices, glamping accommodation and the sensational sunset portraits.

Many thanks goes to Sansom Photography today for sharing these amazing images.

THE PROPOSAL | Pete unexpectedly got down on one knee during a long weekend trip to Snowdonia, Wales. That particular weekend the weather was amazing, the UK had had a lot of snow so it felt like we were in the Alps with snowy peaks and big blue skies - not Wales. We both love walking and hiked up Snowdon one day and Pete had tried to propose by asking me to climb up an icy rock but I didn't dare. The next day we went for a long walk along the coast of Anglesey. When we stopped to admire the view he popped question. I blubbed a lot - I couldn't believe it, we've been together for over 7 years so I thought he was joking but it was a magic day - we both sat a long while and looked out across the sea towards the snowy peaks of Snowdonia.

THE VISION | We decided to host our entire wedding at Gaël's family's farm in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. We are both designers so we loved the fact that we could tailor the entire wedding to suit us and really use our creativity to decorate the venue to suit our style.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | A lot of planning was required!

For the ceremony we decided to have a humanist service. We got to plan the entire order of service and worked closely with our celebrant, Lita Hallyburton to tailor it. She asked us lots of questions to create a ceremony that was incredibly personal to us. Plus we could do bits in French, which was great for Gaël's French famille. We wrote our own vows so it was all very emotional.

We planned to hold the ceremony in the woodland on the farm but also had a back up barn plan just in case the weather took a turn for the worse.

The reception was held in the farms barn, which for over 7 months of the year normally houses cows and sheep. We had to wait until June for the barn to be emptied so we could start the clear up! The entire farm got a big make over; we sowed a lot of wild flowers so that the entire farm track was in bloom. Gaël's Mum planted hundreds of flowers and created the most beautiful hanging baskets. Dead trees in the woodland were felled and logged - overall a lot of effort was made, many weeks spent tidying the farm so it looked amazing for the wedding!

FYI We made the most of all the hard work by having an extended 2-day wedding - we also hosted a wedding fete the day after our wedding day where more guests came to join in and continue in the celebrations! We played lots of farmyard games, had a French boules tournament, and there was also an Irish session. Pete's family are mostly from Devon and they home made the most amazing Devon Cream teas.

BUDGET | We kept to our budget....

THE VENUE | The Venue was private - West Royd Farm, Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Gaël wore a beautiful French inspired lace dress called ' Omari' by designer Catherine Deane.

The jewellery was all from family owned business Lister Horsfall Jewelers Ltd - Halifax.

Hair - was done by bhair, Halifax and the stylist pinned the fresh gypsophila flowers into the Gaël's hair to create a natural flower crown.

Shoes were from La Redoute, JONAK Dual Fabric Patent Leather and Tulle T-bar Shoes leather vintage style t- bar.

FINDING THE DRESS | Gaël had spotted the Omari dress on Pinterest. At first it seemed that the dress was only available via the US BHLDN website so she went to two different bridal shops looking for something similar. But sadly no dresses was quite right and Gaël couldn't get the Omari dress out of her head so was thrilled to discover that Catherine Deane had opened a bridal showroom in her studio down in London. Gaël went with her mum, tried on many of the gorgeous Catherine Deane dresses but settled on the Omari dress she'd already fallen in love with - it was definitely the one for her and because it was short much more practical for a farm yard wedding!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Pete wore a really smart Ted Baker suit with matching waistcoat. Shoes were from Office.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Pete's mum Clare did a lovely reading and also helped Pete's Dad write a funny poem about the bride and groom!

Gaël's uncle wrote a beautiful passage in Breton and French describing Pete like Gaël's cord in life - something she can hold onto.

Tom McConville, renowned fiddle player and previous winner of the BBC folk musician of the year award played a number of tunes for us during our ceremony. Including a waltz he wrote specially for our wedding day which features on his latest album 'Back to Scotswood'.

Becky Taylor played uileann pipes (these are the Irish bag pipes)

This was the tune she played as Gaël walked down the woodland aisle with her Dad, Richard.

Andy Slater - a dear family friend who plays guitar and sings played a modified version of the Beatles ' Ob Bla Di Ob Bla Daa' all the guests had the words to sing along. He also played "All you need is Love" by the Beatles.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Gaël's younger sister Emma. Gaëls sister in law Rosemary. Gaëls best friend Lucy Kurrein. Flower girl - Pete's niece Sophia.

THE FLOWERS | The flowers were all arranged at the farm by Gaël 's mum, Maryannig with the help of some dear friends - particularly Claire Armitage. Many of the flowers were hand picked straight from the garden but the Hydrangeas and Gypsophila were ordered from a local flower wholesaler. Some extra wild flowers were purchased from a local florist in Hebden Bridge, where you buy a bucket of mixed country cottage flowers.

Pete's parents also made these beautiful wreaths and bouquets of wild heather picked from the woodland.

THE CAKE | We had a 7-tier cake of cheese! Our fantastic caterer, Tony from Eat Me Drink Me sourced different cheeses from all over the UK. Gaël's sister who lives in the Alps also brought back some rounds of Thom - speciality sheep cheese from the mountains.

They adorned the cake of cheese with fresh figs, grapes, celery and served this up with locally made bread rolls, cheese crackers and chutney a plenty!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The wonderful duo Chris and Verity Sansom - we first heard about this great couple via some friends who'd had their day captured by them. Needless to say they know how to handle a camera but not only are their images amazing they tell a story through their photos - capturing the emotions of the day and the details that we all obsess over! We are so thrilled that they were there to document our wedding - we never expected such incredible pictures.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | All the food was prepared and served by Eat Me Drink Me. Tony was amazing - he became more than just our caterer, but a friend as we leaned on him for lots of wedding advice! From where to position things in the barn, borrowing his rustic wooden fronted bar and quirky vintage props. He also gave us lots of contacts for suppliers. His food was incredible and his team exceeded expectations - keeping all our guests bellies full and glasses topped up.

The wine was from La Croix Belle, a vineyard in France where a family friend works.

The tables, chairs and equipment hire were from Blue Sky Event Solutions.

The barn was decorated by ourselves; we created a space within the big barn by stacking large straw bales so that guests walked under a straw bale entrance. The barn had white fabric drapes suspended across meeting at a peak in the middle. Between the drapes we hung connectible fairy lights. We built a stage with wooden pallets and chipboard and carpeted the entire barn using a second hand marquee carpet we purchased off eBay! We also purchased some festoon lights to suspend outside the barn.

All the candle sticks, jars, signs, blackboards were hand made, painted and written by us or our family and friends. There are too many little décor details to mention but hopefully the pictures will illustrate it for you.

Most of our guests camped over at the farm so the party didn't have to stop! Glampit set up their wonderful bell tents in the field near the barn.

Pete and I also spent our wedding night in the ' wedding bell tent' - which had a metal framed double bed set up with side tables and twinkly lights!

THE HONEYMOON | We went to Mauritius for a fortnight in November. All our guests had clubbed together to send us off to paradise!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | There are too many!! We were completely spoilt by our family and friends. It truly is the people who make a wedding so special, we shared a lot of laughter, banter, tears and beers!

If we have to pick some highlights:

The woodland ceremony and musical procession with all our guests back down to the farm.

The impromptu Ceilidh dancing between dinner courses.

The amazing film that the frenchies put together with jokes relating to the travels they had made to reach the UK for the wedding!

The Genepi liquor shots - specially brewed by Baptiste in the Alps using flowers which only grow 2500m above sea level, this went down a treat but boy it's strong tackle!

The moment Sansom photography pulled us away just in time to capture the valley sunset.

The band - Alex Graham and the Concords, they were incredible and got us all dancing into the early hours!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | It can get stressful but it's worth all the effort because there's no day like it!

Make sure you take a moment to soak up the atmosphere - the day goes so quickly but trust us the memories will last! Enjoy yourselves and make sure you dance LOTS!
