Fashion Week Digest: Fall 2017's Top Trends | Nordstrom Fashion Blog

via

This last month has been a whirl-one filled with designer platforms, reams of fringe, handbags the size of suitcases and crayon-colored eyeshadow. All of these glamorous things have left us in a swivet and given us a bout of fashion fatigue from keeping up with the runway shows and street style. It's a complicated self diagnosis but, we're assured, completely curable.

So once again we turned to Kate Bellman, associate fashion director in our Nordstrom Fashion Office, to distill the runway's biggest trends for fall 2017. Because if someone were to ask us, our response would have sounded like nonsensical Elton John song lyrics: "blue jeans, baby; rocket ships; crocodile shoes and rhinestone sunglasses." See what we mean?

Maison Margiela Fall 2017

Thank goodness for Kate! Here's how the professional broke down the last four weeks for us-plus our on-trend shopping picks. Sing along if you want to!

Menswear Mash-Up

Stella McCartney Fall 2017

"I remain most excited about this menswear mash-up that started with Balenciaga and continues this season with Maison Margiela and Stella McCartney," said Kate. "It's a great take on tailored classics, but slightly disheveled and askew. The perfect place to mix in your plaids, tweeds and shirting-like I needed an excuse to buy a new button-down blouse!" Agreed. We're already buttoning up button-downs over buttoned shirts.

Vinyl Suite

Saint Laurent Fall 2017

The Saint Laurent runway was particularly reflective with vinyl this season. "What's so great about this trend is it breaks all the rules for daytime and evening dressing, and completely blurs the lines! Who says metallic and shine has to be reserved for a night out?" asked Kate. "Pair it back with a tough leather jacket or some sturdy boots and it's just as perfect for the light of day." If Kate gives it her blessing, we'll give it a try.

Color Max

MSGM Fall 2017

Here's a bright idea: try colors in unconventional pairings. Unusual colorways graced the runways at MSGM, Kenzo, Marques'almeida, Chloé. "This is such a great concept because you can just test it out by wearing a bright, statement accessory, or go all in with head-to-toe color mixed and matched," said Kate. "This feels particularly cool in relation to sporty pieces like an oversized puffer jacket."

A Return to Simplicity

Victoria Beckham Fall 2017

"There is still no shortage of decoration and embellishment this season (à la Gucci), but this return to clean and streamlined silhouettes feels like a breath of fresh air," said Kate. "Victoria Beckham is really representing this across both of her lines."

Retro Power Dressing

Bottega Veneta Fall 2017

There's always a decade that inspires each season. This time it was the tailoring of the '40s that found its way on the runway. "What was so great about this runway season was the resounding theme of girl power and a tribute to women," summarized Kate. "This trend focused on the female form with a '40s influence through an emphasis on the strong silhouette: fierce shoulders and nipped waists dominated."

Statement Sleeves

Deplozo Fall 2017

"There was such a broad take on this, from exaggerated '80s puff sleeves to romantic voluminous ruffles-and executed on everything from blouses, dresses, coats and sweaters," Kate told us. "Delpozo pulls it off in such an artful and elegant way." Billowing sleeves were also present in Saint Laurent, Carven, Simone Rocha and Isa Arfen's presentations this season.

Red and White Accessories

Miu Miu Fall 2017 Alexander McQueen Fall 2017

Kate breaks it down in red and white: "The old rule of no white accessories after Labor Day has completely left the building. If you buy one pair of shoes this season, white is a must have. Another dominant color was red. It was absolutely everywhere-Givenchy's entire collection was head-to-toe red!

Statement Earrings

Marni Fall 2017 Y/ Projects Fall 2017

One trend that's easy to try: an eye-grabbing pair of earrings. "With clothing so buttoned up, fall is the perfect season for earrings as a finishing touch," advised Kate. "There is such an exciting offering too, from artful, sculptural earrings to enormous discs and orbs in metals and bold colors."
