Colourful Bohemian Wedding (With an Intimate Twilight Ceremony)

Colourful Bohemian Wedding (With an Intimate Twilight Ceremony)

As you know, we're pretty partial for couples who toss out the rule book when they're wedding planning, and today's awesome bride and groom did just that.

Taking the typical wedding day timeline and flipping it on its head, Misty & Michael had a colourful bohemian wedding day that was filled with eclectic style, dramatic florals, whimsical decor and LOTS of cocktails.

And we're more than a little excited to share their gorgeous pictures by Jane Z Photography.

Kicking off their celebrations with their cocktail hour instead of their ceremony, Misty & Michael were able to push their vows back to nightfall. This meant their day instantly had a unique feel, only enhanced by their romantic, intimate twilight ceremony, surrounded by friends, family and fairy lights.

It also gave Misty the perfect excuse for an outfit change, switching up her iridescent kaftan style gown for a gorgeous boho lace wedding dress with vintage style bell sleeves and an epic fresh floral necklace. In keeping with the alternative look, Michael rocked his man bun with jeans and a tweed waistcoat.

(Be sure to check out the mix and match bridal party style too!)

We can't help but smile when a couple owns their day and puts their own stamp all over it, and Misty and Michael injected a little of their personality into every inch of this cool bash, from the luxe tones to the killer style, and the tasty eats to the array of cocktails.

Scroll down to check it out, and hear more from the bride herself, and Jane Z Photography about how this very special wedding came together.

Wedding Day Snapshot

From the Bride

If I were to describe the vision in my head for this wedding when we began planning I would say 'cohesive chaos' fits best. I wanted it to feel very boho and effortless, which it was thanks to all of our unbelievable vendors and miraculous wedding planner! The color scheme for the wedding was actually not very intentional. I really wanted a wine or deep red color as the focal point so I decided to use both and the others colors just fell into place. I am obsessed with how all colors, attire and accessories came together. We wanted this wedding to be something no one has ever seen before and a reflection of who we are as a couple. I think my favorite unique aspect would be the floral lanterns my ladies walked down the aisle with, oh and my bouquet! (Sigh) With lights intertwined they lit up the ceremony in such a soft sweet way. LOVE. I can say with extreme honesty that our wedding day was a dream. I have two bits of advice for soon-to -be brides and they are: 1. GET A WEDDING PLANNER! (And if you live in Phoenix it has to be Olivia from Liv Events!) and 2. Listen to your heart and do what you want even if those around you don't get your vision. I promise it will be the best decision you make.

From the Photographer

Misty and Michael were married at the Secret Garden on April 22nd 2016. I love this venue, but have never seen a wedding here quite like this one. With a twinkling twilight ceremony, unique timeline, super stylish boho bridal party, flower necklaces and lantern bouquets, it was a totally unique day. As a photographer it was such a dream to shoot.

The Cocktail Hour

Misty had two dresses for the day, the first was a gorgeous silver Free People dress that she wore with a large gorgeous flower crown to the cocktail hour. To really mix up tradition, they chose to have their cocktail hour first before the ceremony and reception. It was a great decision because Misty got to wear her more casual dress first while mingling with their guests. The guests all got to know each other and get comfortable before the ceremony, starting off the wedding day having a blast. Michael was a bar manager until recently and so he made sure that their bar had delicious and fun cocktails. They didn't just have one signature cocktail, but about eight, with fun ingredients like strawberry and peach shrub. The cocktails were all in mini wine barrels with cute signs that were fun for the guests to choose from.

The Wedding Dress

After the cocktail hour, Misty snuck away to get into her more formal wedding gown. Her ceremony gown had long lacy sleeves, and a plunging neckline. She swapped out the flower crown for a more subtle feather headband which she made herself, and a stunning floral neckpiece which tied the whole boho look together. Her bouquet that she used for the ceremony had twinkle lights woven in to sparkle as she walked down the aisle at twilight.

The Bridal Party

I loved all of the bridal party attire which Misty hand picked for each of the bridesmaids, groomsmen and grooms-lady. The groomsmen and lady were by far the coolest looking groomsmen I have ever seen; from bolo ties, floral print ties, vests and rolled jeans... they could not have been more stylish. Michael's sister stood on his side of the wedding, and wore a For Love & Lemons dress with a black floppy hat. The bridesmaids all wore different dresses by Free People, For Love & Lemons, Asos and Revolve in red wine and pink shades which complimented their bold floral headpieces perfectly. Two of the bridesmaids were also adorned with floral bracelets, and Misty even wore an ornate floral necklace with her wedding gown. Misty also gave all of the girls knuckle rings to wear for the wedding as a part of their wedding gifts. There were no traditional bouquets when they walked down the aisle, each girl carried a glowing lantern topped with blooms which looked magical during their twilight ceremony, and was definitely one of my favorite details.

The Ceremony

The twilight ceremony was spectacular. There were twinkle lights with a chandelier above, candles down below, hanging dream catchers and a circular seating arrangement complete with couches from Prim Rentals and an eclectic assortment of chairs that Misty and Michael found from Goodwill. The glowing lanterns that the girls held as they walked down the aisle made the whole ceremony look like a scene from a Midsummer Nights Dream. Misty walked down the aisle with her father and her daughter, Avery. Michael pledged his commitment to Avery as well during the ceremony with a necklace, and Avery stood up with Michael and Misty the entire time uniting their family. The bridal party read little notes that Misty and Michael wrote for them which added another personal touch to their ceremony. There were a lot of tears and laughs by all.

The Reception

The reception was planned in a way to make sure it felt more like a big party than a formal dinner. They did not have seat assignments or formal tables, but let everyone eat whenever they wished through the buffet line and sit wherever they liked. It was catered by one of Misty and Michael's favorite restaurants, The Clever Koi, and the food was amazing. The reception was held under a large tree with the couches brought over from the ceremony, and a big barn for the dancing. Feathers were strung up to hang over the dance floor, and Desert House Productions kept the party going until the very end. This was definitely a wedding I won't forget!

Oh I just love the idea of a ceremony at night, don't you? How cool are those lantern bouquets? So many unique ideas to borrow as well, from how the couple included Misty's daughter, to their gorgeous grooms-lady too.

Thanks so much to Jane Z Photography, and of course, to Misty & Michael for sharing their beautiful bohemian wedding with us.
