The Ultimate Matte Makeup Tutorial

The Ultimate Matte Makeup Tutorial

With highlighting taking center stage for the moment, it's time we bring back a classic look that's been in hiding - matte makeup. The way we see it, any opportunity to make our skin look and feel virtually pore-free and flawless is a no-brainer (especially for us oily-skinned girls). To make sure we get this fab look right, we enlisted the help of makeup artist Alana Dawn. Here's how she goes ALL matte!

Step 1. Using a flat foundation brush or sponge, apply a mattifying foundation like L'Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation all over the face. Blend it out to the neck area as well so you have even color on both regions.

Step 2. Apply a full-coverage, long-lasting concealer like Lancôme Maquicomplet under the eyes, center of your forehead, along the bridge of your nose, chin and on your cupid's bow - then blend in well.

Step 3. Using a foundation that's two shades darker than your skin tone, or a contouring tool like the NYX Highlight & Contour Pro Palette, contour your cheekbones, sides of your nose and along the temples and hairline. Make sure to buff out the darker shade well to ensure the color is subtle. Then, apply a setting powder to your face and underneath the eyes to lock in your makeup.

Step 4. Pat a neutralizing eye shadow base (like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden) onto your entire lid to cover up any redness. Apply a soft, cream eye shadow like Maybelline Color Molten Shadow in Taupe Craze to the lids. Using an angled brush, apply the same shadow along the lower lash line.

Step 5. Apply a strip of false lashes and coat them with a volumizing mascara like Urban Decay Perversion for added drama!

Step 6. Line your lips with Lancôme Le Crayon Lip Contour in Caramel and fill in the rest of your lips. Add a dab of concealer to the middle of your lips and blend out for an ombré effect.

Step 7. Pull your look together with a bold brow using Urban Decay Brow Beater to fill in hair for a natural look and Brow Tamer gel to define and set your brows all day.
